Woman with Pipe (Yokohama Ware)

カップに描かれた老女はカップ単体でも存在感があるが、ソーサーにも同様の絵が描かれ、カップとソーサーで一幅の絵になるように配置される。老女は何とも奇妙な笑顔を見せている。女性はキセルを吸い、横に煙草盆、後ろには菊がいけられており、秋の風情が感じられる。卵殻の薄い磁胎や意匠から明治初期の作品と考えて矛盾はない。 

Cup and Saucer Depicting Woman with Pipe (Yokohama Ware) 

While the woman on the cup exudes a strong presence, the saucer also features a similar image, thus allowing the cup and saucer to be arranged to form one picture. The woman has a bemused look on her face as she smokes a kiseru pipe with a tobacco box resting beside her. In the background, a chrysanthemum arrangement suggests the months of autumn. Given its thin eggshell form, we can assume this set was created in the early Meiji Era (1870 – 1890).
